Frame Relay as Network's Backbone

This approach utilizes frame relay as the backbone of the network, and passes the existing network traffic over it.

Its major advantage is that the frame relay access traffic will be transported with the high performance expected of it. The disadvantage is that the other communications protocols require a significant level of intelligent to recover from any discards that may take place within the frame relay backbone.
