What Is a Modem?

A modem (initials of MOdulator-DEModulator) is a device that enables computer to transmit data on a physical line such as telephone or cable lines.

A computer stores data digitally, whereas the transmission of this data on the physical lines is done in the form of analog waves. The modem's job is to convert analog representation to digital representation and vice versa.

Almost every modem uses some form of error correction and data compression. Error correction is used to check that that the transmitted data is received by the remote modem without mistakes. In case an error is detected by the receiving modem, it requests retransmission of the data. Data compression is used to increase data throughput.
