DIY (Do It Yourself)
Try the telnet protocol yourself, quickly and easily:
-
Navigate to this site: http://www.ductape.net/~mitja/freeunix.shtml. It lists sites that offer free shell accounts, and can be used to test telnet connectivity.
-
Choose a site of one of the service providers and click its link.
-
Usually the first page will display the telnet address of the service, in a format similar to: Telnet: nyx.nyx.net or telnet://nyx.nyx.net.
-
If the address is a hyperlink, clicking it will automatically open a telnet window and connect to the appropriate address.
-
If not, open a new telnet window (in MS-Windows: Start --> Run --> Telnet). In the Telnet window, type ‘open (the address given)’.
-
A new telnet session will be opened, connecting to the given host. Follow the directions to navigate in the telnet application.
